This story is a testament to the greatness of various sectors of a community moving as one to solve issues of the day. And it all begins with a relatively forgotten street in the city of Palm Desert.
Merely a street
Lupine Lane is a street located near the popular commercial district in the area, El Paseo, and Highway 111. Despite its proximity to these virtual meccas of food and dining in the city, it was merely a street people passed on, day in and day out.
Then came the threat of COVID-19.
Regaining economic momentum in a pandemic
As officials of Coachella Valley and the rest of Southern California struggled to keep the deadly virus at bay, the lockdowns they enforced also resulted in many local businesses closing shop due to the utter lack of clients and the challenges to mobility. Faced with the uncertainty on when the pandemic will end, they knew they had to do something to revive their flailing local economy without putting people at risk.
In June last year, a community initiative was launched – Unite Palm Desert. A total of $2.5 million from the city budget was allotted toward this program in an effort to regenerate that “spirit of sunny optimism” despite the gloom of COVID-19. Among its elements are:
- Economic relief
- Essential needs support
- Reconfigured community events
- Business support
- Outdoor dining
And with the last two elements of business support and outdoor dining, the community turned their attention toward Lupine Lane.
A whole block of Lupine Lane was closed off to traffic and converted into one of the newest attractions of Palm Desert. Row upon row of outdoor seating – properly spaced to adhere to safety protocols and with umbrellas to provide shade – can be found here. Now called Lupine Plaza, this lovely and recently opened venue is a cheery dining area where people can sit after getting food and drinks from nearby food establishments in El Paseo and Highway 111. A pop-up bar is also found within the area if you need drinks in a snap.
Business hours at Lupine Plaza are from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. That means these days, among the best things to do in Palm Desert is to take in your healthy dose of Vitamin D in the morning while sipping your coffee, eat a hearty lunch with a friend, or have an after-work cocktail under a canopy of string lights – all in Lupine Plaza.
Since people taking in their meals here are buying their food and drinks from restaurants and bars within the vicinity, these said establishments are benefiting greatly from this new Palm Desert attraction. They are even encouraged to make use of the area for other innovative ideas that will make their food offerings even more accessible to diners here.
